This month, the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Under 18 Women's World Championship will be held at the Meridian Centre in downtown St Catharines.
There has been a lot of buzz around the tournament and at the Meridian Centre, as attendance is expected to reach 5,000.
Partnering with the Niagara Sports Commission, organizations like Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women's Hockey Association are helping to grow the game for women with the hosting and promotion of big events like the IIHF U18 World Championships.
The Canadian National Women’s U18 Team has appeared in every gold medal game at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship, winning four gold medals in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014; and four silver medals in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2015.
Canada kicks off the tournament against Russia on Friday, with other scheduled teams including the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.
The Bronze Medal game will be held at the Meridian Centre on Jan. 15, at 4 p.m., with the gold-medal game to follow.
